Survey for Conservation Planning

Dear colleague,

We are interested in your expert opinion on several important questions concerning the spatial layout of nature reserves and how it influences different levels of biodiversity, from genetics to ecosystem services, and corresponding conservation goals. We are seeking ways to build the issue of scale into policy and decision-making as well as into biodiversity management. Our study, complemented by other analyses, will then inform recommendations for a coherent framework to support biodiversity conservation across spatial and temporal scales. We count on your help and hope you are ready to invest approximately 15 minutes for our survey.

For our survey, you need to look at the 15 habitat patterns (click here) and tell us your opinion on how good each pattern would be for one of the 5 conservation goals (Genetic diversity, Genetic health, Population persistence, Species richness, Crop yield in matrix (ecosystem service) and for one of the suggested species groups for which you are an expert (amphibians, small mammal / butterfly / songbird / calcicole herb / forest tree). In the different scenarios, the black cells represent ideal habitat for the species you are considering.

If you choose to assess 'crop yield', then on the next page please select "butterfly" if you are considering insect pollination services, or "small mammal" if considering any kind of herbivore damage.

There are three parts to the survey

  1. How good is each scenario?
Enter the scores for your assessment, with 1 for the best scenario and 15 for the worst (scores may be considered as ranks and you should give each score only once).
  2. Which geometric criteria are important?
Look at the list of geometric criteria below and indicate how important each one was when you made your assessments.
  3. Some more general questions on who you are
Please, let us know as much as you want us to know about your position, and expertise. This is of interest for putting the results in perspective.
We would be most grateful if you could fill in your assessment for at least one conservation goal, for one species type, considering all three spatial scales (i.e. 45 scores altogether).

You can choose to give your name or remain anonymous.

We will use the results to help create a tool for assessing habitat networks. First, the responses will be compared with each other to see how much consensus there is among experts (this is why we ask you how confident you are about each section). Then, the responses will be compared with output from simulator models that attempt to assess landscapes by the same conservation criteria, to help us decide how reliable the simulators are. All of this will be taken into account as we develop software for evaluating landscapes quantitatively.
